Pain Relief for an Earache

25 Jun

Earaches are caused by some sort of trauma or damage to the ear usually from an injury, infection, or some inflammation. Ear infections are the most common reason that people experience earaches, and can be quiet painful, especially if they are left to heal on their own. While there are some natural, at home treatments that some people swear by for getting rid of the pain caused by an earache, for most people the underlying problem will need to be treated by a doctor who can then prescribe painkillers to go along with it.

Pain Control at Home

bad-earacheIf you are unable to get to the doctor right away but don’t want to suffer through an earache without trying to treat it yourself, there are some ways that you can try to control the pain. Using a hot washcloth or heating pad, place it on the painful ear and allow the heat to relax away some of the pain. This will not fix any underlying causes of the earache, but may remove some of the symptoms that you’re experiencing. Another remedy is to use over the counter ear drops to try to clear out the area. Resting and sleeping sitting in a chair is a great way to take pressure off of the painful area. When you are laying down with an earache the blood flow to the area may make the pain almost unbearable.

Painkillers and Other Forms of Pain Management

For a lot of earaches, simply resting in a different position or heating the affected area will not get rid of the problem. Ear infections are incredibly painful and won’t respond well to natural pain management. These, if left unchecked, can result in a ruptured eardrum that will require strong painkillers. Going to the doctor if you have an earache that won’t go away is a smart move. While they may tell you to use ibuprofen and tylenol for pain management, if your situation is particularly severe they may have to prescribe stronger painkillers for you such as Co-Codamol. These can easily be picked up at your local pharmacy, and once you start taking them you should feel relief almost immediately.

Suffering through extreme pain is never a good idea, but some small earaches may respond well to over the counter medicine and a little rest. Ones that won’t go away or get more and more painful will need to be treated by a doctor. Only they can prescribe the correct pain pills you may need.
